Anyone can do that!

‘Anyone can do that’ is a comment I sometimes hear people say when they see a fluid artwork.  I have to admit, it looks easy doesn’t it? I mean, where’s the skill in pouring a few colours on a canvas and swirling it around a bit? Well, I thought that too when I first saw a few videos on YouTube, so I thought ‘I can do that’ and I went and stared at my collection of acrylic paints and set about it.

It didn’t go so well though.  The watered down paints ended up mixing into one muddy mess on the canvas and some of them had terrible cracking when they were dry.  So I went back and watched a few more videos.  Seems like there’s a lot to do in preparation before even thinking about pouring!  And, things such as temperature, humidity, paint thickness all play a part.  That’s before you get to deciding which additives to use.  And, once you’ve got all that sorted out, finding a level surface where you can leave your masterpiece to dry for the next few days.

I have spent the last couple of years practising and honing my art.  I’m still not there yet, but I’ve managed to create a few pieces of artwork that I’m pleased with.  I’ve even sold a few too, so I must be doing something right!

In all honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever learn it all – but I like that, there’s always something new with this type of art: new products, new methods, new techniques.  There’s never a dull moment (literally), that’s for sure!
